Description: An evergreen perennial shrub of the genus Salvia, the sages, has highly aromatic, waxy gray green leaves that turn white as they mature. It has a fresh, strong, warm-herbaceous and camphoraceous aroma.
The name Salvia derives from the Latin 'salveo', which means 'to heal'. Indeed this herb is highly regarded for it's healing qualities. Known as Grandfather Sage, White Sage, Bee Sage or Sacred Sage. The white sage varieties used as herbs stem from the Mediterranean and Asia Minor and Sage has been grown in Central Europe since the Middle Ages.
It’s flowers bloom for over a month from late April to early June and during that time the bees provide quite a symphony for the garden. The flower wands will add two to five feet to the height and will have tiny white flowers that are dotted with lavender. To the bees they are heaven, which it is why it is sometimes referred to as Bee Sage. This species also attracts hummingbirds, wasps, and is deer resistant.
It is considered a sacred herb and part of many Native American traditions used in smudge bundles as a natural ceremonial incense. It’s used for spiritual purification ceremonies to purify people and places such as a home purification and sweat lodge ceremonies. In theory, the smoke attaches itself to negative energy and as the smoke clears it takes the negative energy with it, releasing it into another space where it will be regenerated into positive energy.
The misting of the essential oil would be beneficial where smudging is not permitted. This rare oil is distilled in small batches.
The essential oil contains 1,8 cineole, limonene, α-pinene, α-thujene β-pinene camphene, myrcene, camphor, terpinolene, linalool, α-bisabolol, β-bisabolene, among others.
