Balm of Gilead Herbal Infused Oil, (also known as a macerated oil), (Populus balsamifera L), commonly called Balsam poplar, eastern balsam poplar, and tacamahac poplar has been used medicinally for centuries.  Here in North American, also known as Cottonwood Trees, it is harvested by hand from the sticky resin of the “Cottonwood Leaf  Buds”, which has an awesome sweet, clean fragrant aroma.  This amazing oil is made by a gentle infusion of the fresh Cottonwood leaf buds in a base oil of extra virgin olive oil that produces a powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic oil.

Topically used for many herbal applications and to help soothe general skin irritations such as minor wounds and burns, sunburns, cough syrups, bug bites, abrasions, bruises, contusions, ulcers, hemorrhoids, headaches, nerve pain, muscle aches and pains and many other skin issues. Balm of Gilead Herbal Infused Oil is a good choice when used as a base for salves and ointments for troubled skin.  Also excellent when used in a massage oil.  Its properties are noted as antibacterial, antioxidant, analgesic, astringent, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic and depurative.

The biblical reference is to the Balm of Gilead, or Mecca balsam, or the source of healing balsamic oils in the old world. The historic Old World Balm of Gilead is a small evergreen tree (Commiphora gileadensis, also once called C. opobalsamum) of the family Burseraceae (incense-tree family) native to Africa and Asia.  It is referred to in the Bible in Jer. 8.22. The Ishmaelites from Gilead were bearing balm when they bought Joseph from his brothers.

The popular trees here in North America have the same healing properties. Buds from Populus nigra, P. canadensis, and P. tacamahaca are the most common ones used therapeutically.
