Citronella oil is extracted from a tall hardy grass native to Sri Lanka and Java. It is a very aromatic perennial that grows approximately to three feet in height. The essential oil is colorless to pale yellow with a sweet fresh lemony fragrance. The Java citronella type yields twice as much as the Sri Lanka type. An important essential oil produced on a large scale. Citronella Java essential oil was one of the worlds dominant insect repellents before the introduction of DDT. Recent history has indicated that Citronella is once again becoming the product of choice for health conscious customers.
The major components are geraniol and citronellal and citronellol, with geranyl acetate, limonene and camphene, among others. The aldehyde content suggests that it has excellent antimicrobial properties. It is recommended for inhalation against colds, flu and minor infections.
Mainly known as an insect repellent and used extensively in soaps and candles, it can also be sprayed, diffused into the air, or applied to the skin in a carrier oil.
Product Application:
Essential oils should never be applied directly on the skin without diluting properly, usually blending with a carrier oil.
