Historically, all parts of the Manuka plant has been used by the Maori people of New Zealand for a wide variety of their natural medicinal applications.  Manuka is an evergreen shrub that grows wild and is native to New Zealand, but also grows in Australia.  It’s green fragrant leaves bears small flowers – white to pink.  Its aroma is gentle, fresh, with a distinctive woody, herbaceous aroma.  Not quite as pungent as tea tree oil.

The essential oil from this chemotype is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs and is usually colorless to pale yellow.  Manuka’s essential oil components are low in monoterpenes and relatively high in sesquiterpenes and triketones. 

An example of its main components are: a-cubebene, b-pinene, r-cymene, g-terpinene, 1,8-cineole, a-copaene, and myrcene, b-caryophyllene, aromadendrene, calamanene, flavesone, iso leptospermone and leptospermone, limonene, among others.

Blends well with other essential oils such as basil, bergamot, black pepper, chamomile, clary sage, cypress, eucalyptus, geranium, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, litsea cubeba, marjoram, orange, patchouli, peppermint, petitgrain, pine, ravensara, rosemary, sage, sandalwood, tea tree, and thyme.
